I just got back from Vegas and was updating my life reading your blog and came across Richard's Gazette Article. I , too, had a Gazette route that I inherited from Ken Naylor ( Regent, Miller, Sexton, Cambell, Anyon, Emborne etc.) As I remember 50 papers.
The article on the new subscriptions reminded me of the Gazette guy that used to look after all of us ( Mr. George ) .. I never knew his first name. We would all rip him off in his contests and he would keep coming back for more. I remember getting a Ball glove and a James Dean Jacket in a similar manner..... and a lot of crap stuff too.I used to hate when he would show up in the Park and drive us all around knocking on peoples doors to try and talk them into the Gazette. When he would show up I would hide and my mother would tell him I was out with my dad or something.
The next day he would phone, give me shit and about a month later...... same thing again. It's hard to belive but back then the paper was 30 cents a week delivered... The Gazette got 24 cents an we got 6.
A big tipper gave you 50 cents a week. They always got a dry paper. I remember I was making about $15 a week on the Gazette when I finished RGHS and went to work Full time for $45 a week.
I think if you added the caddy money to the Gazette money ( Both of which were not taxed I took a cut in pay when I went to work. Thanks for the memory jogger.
Thanks Ralph B.
