Shanghied

HELLO MARSTON,
IN THE SPRING, 1956, ALOT WAS CHANGING ON THE SOUTH SHORE. THE STREET CARS WERE GONE LIKE THE DINOSAURS, ALSO A GIANT UNDERGROUND SEWER WAS BEING CONSTRUCTED TO CLOSE ALL THE OPEN SEWER CREEKS THAT FLOWED THROUGH THE PARK. THIS CLOSING OF THE CREEKS CREATED A DILEMA FOR ONE FELLOW.ADMIRAL THEODORE (TEDDY) CHARLES.

HE HAD HIS FLOTILLA DRYDOCKED ON THE BANK OF THE BIG CREEK, CHARLES CREEK, DOESN'T MATTER. TEDDY'S FLEET CONSISTED OF A VERCHERES TYPE ROW BOAT, GOOD FOR 3 PEOPLE. THERE WEREN'T ANY OARS BECAUSE IN THE OPEN SEWER CREEK, POLING WAS THE METHOD OF PROPULSION.THE PRIDE OF THE FLEET NEEDED TO BE RELOCATED OVER TO SIMARD'S DAM, BEFORE THE DRAINAGE DITCH DRIED UP.ONE FINE DAY NEAR THE END OF MAY, AT SCHOOL, ADM. CHARLES REQUESTED OUR SERVICES FOR THE GRAND LAUNCH AND MOVEMENT OVER TO THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER.

ANOTHER KID DOUG BARLEY AND MYSELF WERE IN THE PRESS GANG, YOU COULDN'T SAY NO AS THE ADMIRAL HAD SENIORITY PLUS HE WAS MEANER. IT DIDN,T TAKE ANY PERSUASION SINCE THIS WAS WHERE WE OFTEN FOOLED AROUND ANYWAY.

THE GRAND MOVEMENT BEGAN WITH A BIG SPLASH UP AT THE CHARLESGREENHOUSE ON DEVONSHIRE AMONG ALL THE BROWN TROUT (TURDS). WE SAILED (POLLED)WESTWARD, ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE GOLF COURSE UNTIL THE CONFLGRATION OR MEETING OF THE MIDDLE OPEN SEWER CREEK. WE THEN HEADED WESTWARD UNTIL THE RAILROAD TRACKS, THEN DOCKED OR PARKED AT THE BIG WILLOWS FOR THE NIGHT,ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF THE WAY TO THE DAM. IT WAS EXAM TIME AND THE NEXT DAY WE HAD A FINAL MATH TEST. I ACED THE TEST AND TEDDY SAID I GOT THE GOOD MARK FROM BREATHING THE AIRS AND GETTING SOAKED FROM THE CREEK. THE BOAT MADE IT TO THE RIVER WITH SOMEBODY ELSE HELPING. I HAVEN'T SEEN TEDDY IN ABOUT 20 YEARS.

MAYBE JEAN MCS KNOWS WHERE THE ADMIRAL IS. I HEAR THE OTHER MEMBER OF THE NAVAL MOVEMENT, DOUG BARLEY, IS GETTING MARRIED IN CUBA ON MARCH 14TH., GOOD LUCK DOUG AND JANET. JOHN BURT IS BEST MAN, JACK HYNES WILL ALSO ATTEND THE CEREMONY.

RICHARD............

Thanks Richard W.
