Sorry to read about your Windows Vista problems. I long ago gave up on Windows and run Linux. I have Mandriva Linux on my desktop machine and Ubuntu on my laptop. I highly recommend either of these. Both of these distributions have live CDs/DVDs that you can run from your DVD drive without installing to your hard drive if you just want to try them out without committing.
Download the burnable images from the respective websites. Linux has much less problems with drivers than Vista, although most manufacturers don't ship Linux drivers with their hardware. Most Linux drivers are community developed.
Linux is free software (free as in freedom) as defined by the Free Software Foundation. There is a ton of free software available for download. Linux is free of the viruses and malware that plagues Windows. Switch, you won't regret it. (You can also install Linux as dual boot if you want the option of booting Windows on occasion.)
