HERE IS AN UPDATE ON THE MISSING HOUSE ON ST CHARLES CORNER OF VERCHERES..
IN RECENT YEARS THE CHARLES LEMOYNE HOSPITAL HAS BEEN TRYING TO EXPAND AND THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PURCHASE SOME OF THE HOMES ON ST CHARLES AND VERCHERES AND MARY.
THEY HAVE TORN DOWN THE HOMES ON MARY TO INCREASE THE PARKING LOT SIZE AND THE ST CHARLES CORNER HAS ALSO BEEN DESTROYED SO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CAN ALSO INCREASE IN SIZE.
YOU MAY HAVE ALSO NOTICED THE NEW INDOOR PARKING ON ST CHARLES STREET. WHEN IT IS COMPLETED AND IN COMPLETE USE THE PARKING LOT AT THE FRONT OF THE HOSPITAL WILL CLOSE SO CARS WILL BE USING THE NEW PARKING. CONSTRUCTION WILL THEN START IN THE FRONT OF THE HOSPITAL BETWEEN TASCHEREAU AND THE EXISTING BUILDING.
THEY ARE BUILDING A NEW ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT THERE. IT WILL BE THE ONLY ONE ON THE SOUTH SHORE SO CANCER PATIENTS WILL NOT BE FORCED TO CROSS THE BRIDGE INTO MONTREAL FOR TREATMENTS BUT CAN BE TREATED CLOSE TO HOME.
A LITTLE BIT OF ADDED INFORMATION FOR YOU. THE HOSPITAL ACTUALLY OWNS SEVERAL OF THE HOMES ON VERCHERES AND MARY. AT THE PRESENT TIME THEY ARE BEING USED TO HOUSE STUDENTS. THE HOSPITAL IS HOOKED UP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF SHERBROOKE MEDICAL DIVISION AND THESE STUDENTS COME HERE TO DO THEIR TRAINING.
Thanks Bernie C.
Would you let Lilliane know the houses on Vercheres and St Charles were torn down to make extra room for the parking Lot for the Hospital directly behind it. My Wife Shirley Kelley, lived in the one next to the corner and its gone too. The price of progress.
The disappearance of the house at the corner of St. Charles and Vercheres is related to the expansion of Charles Lemoyne Hospital. Two houses at that corner were purchased by the hospital foundation and demolished.
The same thing happened to several more on Mary. The foundation owns most if not all the remaining homes on Mary and Vercheres that border on the hospital land. It is not clear if they will all be demolished.
This expansion is also the reason that Cedar between Greenfield and St. Charles has now disappeared. There is now a four story parking garage built where the street used to be. This resulted in three homes on Greenfield being demolished.
The work on the hospital will likely begin next spring and will see a new building for cancer treatment built on the parking area in front of the hospital. Following completion of that building the plans call for the expansion of the emergency area towards Vercheres as well as upwards.
Needless to say there will be several years of construction before everything is finished. The old neighbourhood will certainly look different.
