Trip to France and Belgium final 10.
6355 The largest Commonwealth Cemetery in Belgium is Tyne Cot, near Paschendale. It was on a slight hill fortified by the Germans with 3 concrete structures - 2 in front and 1 behind, a little higher. Tens of thousands of our troops were ordered to fight their way to the highest bunker. Most lie buried where they fell. You can see one of the German fortifications under the trees. From these spots German machine gunners were able to mow down wave after wave of our gallant soldiers who were sent to their deaths by their incompetant commanders.
6360 The thousands of graves. The name of each soldier who died is read out today about every ten seconds and his photo is shown in the museum.
6369 The beautiful Belgian city of Bruges (spelled Brugge by the Flemish).
6410 The swans swimming in the canals of Bruges.
6420 Canal and warning tower that we climbed to the top. All 330 steps.
