Win's Vacation Pics

Marty......Today we start with a pic. of the desert on i-25(south) between Albuquerque and Truth or Consequences, N.M. The next photo was taken at the Memorial Park in T. or C. - Those of you who have been to the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C. will notice how similar these both are - Apparently the one in T. or C. was built first!!

You will note the pic. of the Rio Grande as it flows through T. or C. - It's not as wide as it is in Albuquerque but much prettier. - The Rio Grande where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Brownsville, Tx. looks like a sewer!! (our trip last year)
Next is a man made lake (dam on the Rio Grande) .........AN INTERESTING NOTE: Truth or Consequences, N.M. was originally named Hot Springs, however the radio (then later television) show that started in 1950 and starred Ralph Edwards (later joined by Bob Barker in 1970) held a contest asking all small towns across the U.S. to consider changing their name to Truth or Consequences (after their show) - Hot Springs who at the time was lagging in tourism entered the contest - the rest is history!!.

We retraced our route on i-25 and then headed east on Hwy 380 towards Roswell, N.M. - About 20 miles or so along this hwy Ann mentioned that we had entered the White Sands area and that the "Trinity Site" (first atomic bomb explosion) was only a few miles south of where we were presently driving. Almost immediately we noticed that the surrounding landscape (rocks) was black in colour (this continued for a few miles and as far as the eye could see in all directions) - not sure if this was mother nature or "That Bomb" at work!!

The next photo is of a gas station (bring back pleasant memories anyone??)

Upon arrival at Roswell it didn't take long to realize that this whole city is about that rumoured Spacecraft crash back in 1947 - I had my hands on one of those little buggers but he got away!!

The pic. of the cactus/flowers/mountains was taken between Roswell and Carlsbad Caverns, N.M. on hwy 285

More to follow.............................Win

Thanks Win S.
