Ho Marston REPORT # 6
Coming down those hills was a lot faster than going up. I'm heading to Maple creek and I'm going to take a side trip into Fort Walsh where they trained the horses for the R.C.M.P Ride.. ANY ONE BEEN THERE BEFORE ? IF YOU HAVE PICTURES , SEND THEM IN and lets share your stories.
Mean time the next town on highway 1 is Irving..
I have lived in the Hat for 5 years now and have driven by but never in to this little town only 20 miles away. Its like a scene from W.O. Mitchell's : "Jake and the Kid". The general store has gum drops, jewbs-jewbs and candies in big jars, Wow! I haven't seen this many varieties since the Dead Sea was just getting sick and me with a credit card!!!
There's evidence to indicate people have been working hard to keep the place alive and it looks great.
I don't know what kind of beef you get off a Sun Dance Bison but this specimen looks like he hasn't seen a decent drink for a while, probably taste like road kill too.
The bill board serves as a community paper, where any one can post a notice about anything. THe big event of the year is a week long Rodeo bash to celebrate 20 MILE POST DAYS. Thats when the old stage coach used to come out the twenty miles from the Hat to deliver mail in town.
The ATB sign on the front of the store means there is an Alberta Treasury Branch, or a real home spun old time government Bank in side
Sure enough, in the rear there is a "cage" about the size of walk in closet and locked inside is the teller. She takes deposits and requests. The only thing missing is the green sun visor, and single bulb light hanging from the ceiling. I didn't think I should take a picture as it might be misunderstood. These days of high jackings she might pull out a double barrelled shot gun loaded with salt and pepper like they did in the old days and tan my hide Clyde
THey say there are a little over 500 residents living here.
For now
