After the Apostles there is an area called The Shipwreck Coast due to the many ships that had a tragic end and before the first light house was built at Cape Otway. One well known case is commemorated here.
The clipper ship Loch Ard en route to Melbourne struck one of the small islands in the early hours of 1 June 1878 and was totally wrecked. There were only two survivors - a crew member and a young daughter of a family of six - who were washed up into an inlet now known as the Loch Ard Gorge.
Only four bodies were ever recovered and they are buried in a small cemetery near the edge of the cliffs. The remains of the wrecked ship were only discovered by divers in 1967.
PS: I have included a number prefix in the files names (16 - 20). Please display them in this order to correspond with the narrative.
